Being a boss is not easy. In a boss's seminar, I attended a breakout session where ideas were tossed around. One of the ideas that I took from the session that I modified was the quarters in a cup. The purpose of the quarters in a cup is to reward the employees every time do they do something good. Whenever I get a new employee I ask them to bring their favorite cup to work. That cup is used later to fill up with quarters that I give them for doing a good job. One good thing I learned is that when you have multiple employees, they will compete with each other and learn how they get rewarded a quarter. In general, it is a good way to change the perspective of being scolded by the boss and instead being rewarded for the good things that are accomplished. From the boss perspective, it’s easy to part with just one quarter at a time rather than say $50. Ultimately, it is a win-win situation for both the boss and the employees because the boss gets high quality work and the employees get the monetary gain and possibly develop better skills for the job. At the end of the day, people will do things for the pleasure of doing them instead of for the fear that might arise from not doing something.
